The Library of Congress photograph below is from the last Bare-Knuckle world title bout in history. It ended a 170 year legacy of champions. John L. Sullivan (chest facing camera) defeated challenger Jake Kilrain after 75 brutal rounds, when Kilrain’s corner stopped the fight upon the doctor's advice that he would surely die if he continued. Held on July 8th, 1889, in Richburg, Mississippi, the fight lasted two & a half hours, under a blistering midday sun. Both fighters were said to be sipping a mixture of sweet tea and whiskey in-between rounds.
