John L. Sullivan vs. Jake Kilrain
The Library of Congress photograph below is from the last Bare-Knuckle world title bout in history. It ended a 170 year legacy of champions. John L. Sullivan (chest facing camera) defeated challenger Jake Kilrain after 75 brutal rounds, when Kilrain™ corner stopped the fight upon the doctor's advice that he would surely die if he continued. Held on July 8th, 1889, in Richburg, Mississippi, the fight lasted two & a half hours, under a blistering midday sun. Both fighters were said to be sipping a mixture of sweet tea and whiskey in-between rounds.
